Description
The Fang and Rigid Designator April of 2014.
The Fang is a 130ft free hanging icicle in Colorado. (In this photo it is on the right, west of the Rigid Designator, which is on the left.) Though in the past it would form on its own, now the formation of the fang's pillar is aided by hanging a rope so that the ice forms more consistently. Despite this, it can form poorly and fall down a few times before thickening. However, when it grows to climbing form, the base can be as large as 40ft in diameter.
In January 2010 an ice climber was "kicked" from The Fang and fell 100ft after part of ice broke away while he was climbing. He survived!
The consensus difficulty rating for The Fang is WI5-6.
The Fang & Rigid Designator are located in an Amphitheater of the Gore Range on the east end of Vail, Colorado in the White River National Forest.
