Description
A tarn at the summit of Independence Pass reflects the colors of the morning sky. The end of the tarn and the Elk Mountain Range provide the definition for this Elevated Horizon at an altitude of 12,095ft/3686m. The sharp peaks in the horizon line are the iconic Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak, and Capital Peak, 4 of Colorado's many +14,000ft Peaks.
Independence Pass is part of the "Top of the Rockies" Scenic Byway, this section is found along Colorado State Highway 82 between Twin Lakes and Aspen. It climbs over the Continental Divide of North America in the Sawatch Range and is closed in from mid-October to the end of May due to dangerous winter weather and avalanche condition.
