The Champion Mill is part of a mining complex on the eastern slope of Mount Champion on Halfmoon Creek at an altitude of 11,600'. The mine is located at a much higher elevation along the ridge line of Mt Champion near its peak. Established in the 1890s, it was a consistent supplier of gold and silver, as well as galena and pyrite to the smelters in nearby Leadville. The mine and mill operated until around 1919, when the price to ship the ore into Leadville became too expensive to maintain a profit. Much of the milling equipment still sets inside the ever decaying structure, as it continues to weather the heavy snows & harsh environment of the Sawatch Range. Lake County, Colorado, USA.
Jeremy Rhoades grew up at 10,400' among the 14ers of the Sawatch Range, Colorado's highest mountains. In his late 20's, he relocated to Alaska in order to fulfill a life-long obsession with "BIG" mountains and extreme snowfall & temperatures. Photography was the way for Jeremy to share the towering mountains of Alaska and a unique, almost surreal light in the northern latitudes. Jeremy has moved back to Colorado & continues to share his love of high altitudes, as mountain landscapes are the clear focus of his work. He hopes you will enjoy the many scenes made available here. The Forests Edge Photography - Diane Sandoval
I keep coming back to this photograph because I love the rich color of the old mill, but even more so for the little pop of color in the flowers~nice composition! L&F
Jeremy Rhoades replied:
I keep coming back to the mill wondering when it will have finally collapsed. Thankfully, it has been shored up on one corner and appears as good as it was 20 yrs ago. Thank you for the comment, L,&F, Diane!
